Creating Immersive Virtual Landscapes

Developed during my master's studies in landscape architecture, this research examines depth and distance perception in head-mounted virtual environments. The work was conducted at the Virtual Landscape Design Lab at Istanbul Technical University, directed by Dr. Ikhwan Kim. It addresses a challenge in architectural visualization: environments that appear spatially convincing on a screen may communicate depth, scale, and structure differently when viewed through a headset.
Methodology
The paper documents the design and construction of an immersive virtual landscape for investigating environmental legibility. It examines visual cues, spatial layers, and scale references that support interpretation of depth and distance. The application context is the communication of unbuilt architectural and planning proposals to clients, reviewers, and communities.
Project Outcomes
The paper was published in the proceedings of eCAADe 2023. Its findings informed subsequent work in spatial computing and environment design, including BioTerrarium, where perceptual clarity is integrated into the interaction design.
